Kyprios difficult to oppose in Goodwood Cup

July 2024

Kyprios served a reminder of why he is the very best stayer around at Royal Ascot and it is hard to see anything stopping him landing his second Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on Tuesday.

The six-year-old cemented his place as number one in the division when bravely downing four-time Goodwood Cup winner Stradivarius and then defending champion Trueshan two years ago. Having missed the race last season, he is back to reclaim his crown.

Aidan O'Brien has worked his magic to bring the son of Galileo back from a major setback and he looked better than ever when bringing up a hat-trick for the season at the Royal meeting.

Trawlerman, who beat Kyprios on British Champions Day and chased him home in the Gold Cup last month, is not in the line-up at Goodwood and that leaves the path clear for Kyprios to extend his winning run.

O'Brien is also expected to land the HKJC World Pool Vintage Stakes with the promising The Parthenon.

Not beaten far when fifth on his debut in the Group Three Marble Hill Stakes, the Kingman colt confirmed that promise when opening his account at the second time of asking at Gowran Park.

The Parthenon looked to relish the step up to this 1400m trip that day and while others have stronger form in the book, O'Brien's youngster is open to major improvement.

The Wathnan Racing-owned English Oak moves up to Pattern company in the HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes following his scintillating victory at Royal Ascot.

The four-year-old fairly bolted up in the Buckingham Palace Stakes, coming home 3-lengths clear of what looked a competitive field and marking himself as the proverbial Group performer masquerading as a handicapper.

Ed Walker's son of Wootton Bassett now faces the acid test of his ability, but heads into deep waters on a real upward curve and with plenty of momentum behind him.

It may pay to side with Enfjaar in the opening Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap, with Roger Varian's four-year-old very much heading in the right direction.

Having shown plenty of ability since his winning debut at Newmarket at two, he lost his way last season, but is back on track after being gelded over the winter.

A winning return at Chelmsford teed up a shot at the John Smith's Cup and he made relatively light work of that valuable 20-runner York event, winning comfortably by 1.75-lengths.

He was handed a 6lb rise for that Knavesmire success, but there is every chance he is much better than the opposition and can take this en route to even bigger assignments in the autumn.

Owen Burrows' Fair Wind is 10lb higher than when scoring over track and trip in May, but has since added a further victory to his growing CV and searches for a third win of the year in the Coral Racing Club Handicap.

At Beverley, the Keith Walker Never Change Your Mind Memorial EBF Novice Stakes looks the perfect place for George Boughey's Lakers to try an extended 1400m.

Off the mark at the second attempt at Ffos Las earlier this month, the son of Pinatubo shaped like he would be even more impressive the further he went.

The youngster is a half-brother to owners Amo Racing's highly-regarded Ornellaia, who not only has a win over 1400m to her name but has also been placed in Group One company at the distance.

There could be a touch of class on the all-weather at Lingfield, where Tom Clover's dominant course and distance winner Harvard Sound looks to double up in the Get The Inside Track With raceday-ready.com Novice Stakes. - Press Association
