Kotzen to stymie Greeff attack

April 2021

SHARON KOTZEN

Jack Milner: Trainer Sharon Kotzen will attempt to do a King Canute act at Fairview on Friday.

The Danish King is said to have stood on the sea shore in an attempt to turn back the tide.

He failed, but Kotzen could well be able to hold off the Alan Greeff deluge in Race 3, a MR 96 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m on the Polytrack, where she saddles Encryption.

Greeff is out in full force in Race 3, sending out five of the 10 runners.

Usually, we can rely on stable jockey Greg Cheyne being on the right one and this could again be the case with Cheyne aboard Wallis Simpson.

As with many of his recruits, Greeff has done an admirable job with this five-year-old mare, winning three of the seven races under his care.

Those three wins, however, were in her last four starts, which shows how good she has been of late. Although her latest win was on the turf, she is just as good on the Polytrack – if not even better – and her rider knows her well so she should run another big race.

However, if Wallis Simpson is the right horse, then Encryption has to be a major contender.  Two runs back she finished a 0.50-length second behind Greeff’s charge in a Progress Plate and is now 5kg better off. Even though that race was on the turf, the weight adjustment is more than enough to turn the tables.

Last time out, which was on the Polytrack, Encryption dead heated for second with Golden Chance behind talented Blue Duchess and is now 0.5kg better off. That was on the Polytrack.

In addition, Kotzen has engaged Lyle Hewitson this time, and with just 53kg on her back, this Elusive Fort filly will take some catching.
