Kelly set for third triumph

August 2022

Jack Milner

Kelly Mitchley has had an extraordinary start to her career as a trainer but it’s not as if she has not had all the necessary experience from some of the top yards in the country.

Though only having turned 26 in June, she has run satellite yards in the Eastern Cape for Snaith Racing, Johan Janse van Vuuren and Corne Spies and recently decided to take out her own licence.

She had her first runner in July and already had produced some incredible results.

Mitchley has saddled 13 runners and has had two winners and four second places, giving her a 46.15 win-place percentage.

She could have another winner in Race 3 at Fairview on Monday when they race on the Polytrack. She sends out Grand Destiny in this Maiden Plate over 1600m and based on the gelding’s two runs for the yard, this Master Of My Fate gelding could prove the bet of the day.

His first run was over 1200m on the Polytrack where he was very one paced, finishing 5.75 lengths behind Victory Of Dubai, but once put over 1600m next time Grand Destiny ran on late to end up a 0.75-length second to Mactavish.

He did find betting support which indicates the run was no fluke. The only change Mitchley made to his equipment was to exchange blinkers for cheekpieces.

Grand Destiny is owned by Suzette Viljoen who once again is demonstrating her willingness to support emerging trainers.

Marco van Rensburg takes the ride.

Alan Greeff and Richard Fourie could open the meeting with a victory on Potente who looked a little unlucky last time when runner-up behind Russian Empire.

He improved in blinkers on that occasion, found a lot of betting support and produced a much-improved effort, suggesting a win is not far off.
