Kannemeyer, De Melo for feature success

April 2023

Jack Milner

Two of the three feature events on Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Scottsville racemeeting are Listed races which will be closely watched as they are preps for up-and-coming Group races.

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer’s first-choice jockey, national log-leader Keagan de Melo, will be hoping to pick up all three as his mounts have big chances.

Rex Union did not appear to be a stayer when starting off his career but he immediately filled the mould when winning his marathon debut easily last year. He has not won another race since but don’t let that fool you, his merit rating has since risen from 80 to 105 before tapering off to 97. He did, after all, place third in the last running of the premier stayers’ event, the Gold Cup over 3200m.

And that is what makes him stand out in Race 5, the 2400m World Sports Betting Highland Night Cup (Race 5).

The local contingent is headed up by Queue Wing who is trying the distance for the first time and while he has had a great season so far, he will be tested against a proven Graded performer, but still starts his marathon career racing off a lofty merit rating of 98.

Dawnofanewday could provide the best value of the three Kannemeyer runners in Race 6, the Listed World Sports Betting Scarlet Lady over 1750m. It iis a wide-open fillies and mares event but Dawnofanewday is very well weighted.

Highveld-based Hollywoodbound may be best weighted by 0.5kg, but she will have to make the trip to KwaZulu-Natal and then perform to her best at a track known to spoil top-class form.

The Quartet looks to be the bet to take and include all of Queen Of Shadows, Hollywoodbound, Macara, Sister Light and Supreme Quest to get a piece of what is sure to be a healthy pool. Queen Of Shadows, it must be said, has been knocking at the door and may just pull it off.

Silvano’s Timer could be the best of Kannemeyer’s runners. While Race 7, the Listed World Sports Betting Sledgehammer run over 1750m also appears a mixed bag, his 2.15-length defeat by top-class Rascallion in the Grade 2 Premier Trophy over 1800m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in January makes him stand out.

Some of his opposition have yet to win over 1600m, let alone 1750m, and his form contains two wins over 1600m and another two over 1800m.

He could thoroughly enjoy this 1750m event and make it a highly successful day for the combination.
