With a gutsy victory in Leg 1 of the Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge last month, Prince Of Fire is the only contender in line for the R250,000 bonus that will be paid to any horse who can win all three legs.
Leg 1 was over 1200m and the distance goes up to 1400m on Friday in Leg 2 at Fairview and Prince Of Fire will attempt to enhance his chances of collecting that bonus.
He had an outstanding debut in the province for new trainer Kelly Mitchley and was given a superb ride by Muzi Yeni. The five-year-old Gimmethegreenlight gelding will have no issue with the extra 200m – he has a record of two wins and two places from five starts over the distance – but he had the advantage of jumping from No 1 draw on that occasion.
On the other hand, Port Louis struggled from an outside draw in Leg 1 but was not disgraced when fourth, just 0.95 lengths behind Prince Of Fire.
This time the positions are reversed and it is Port Louis who will jump from No 1 draw while Yeni will need to deal with No 13 barrier position.
Alan Greeff’s charge also has a decent record over the distance, winning two of his seven starts and placing in another four.
The other advantage for Port Louis, also a son of Gimmethegreenlight, is that Richard Fourie will be back in the irons this time although substitute Denis Schwarz cannot be faulted for his ride last time.
Pole position is sure to enable Fourie to get the first run this time and reverse the result with Prince Of Fire.
Gallic Tribe could be next best. Piere Strydom is in town to ride for brother Jacques and he will have support aplenty on his home turf.
