The first entries for the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas officially close on Monday 26 January. However, there are some trainers who like to get their nominations in well ahead of time to make sure there are no foul ups.
In this case, one of these is trainer Dean Smith and his early entry for the Gauteng Guineas over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday 7 February is All Systems Go.
The three-year-old son of Gimmethegreenlight is a full brother to Dean Kannemeyer-trained four-time winner Give Me Everything and is a one-time winner from four starts. His other three races have all seen him finish in the tops three behind some decent horses, especially his last race.
Smith gave the three-year-old gelding a taste of Turffontein by bringing him up to Joburg to contest the Betway Dingaans which was run over the same course and distance as the Guineas.
He certainly did not disgrace himself as he finished third behind Trust and Jan Van Goyen. He was up there with 200m to run but found the top two too good.
Smith took him back to Gqeberha and the three-year-old is carded to line up in Race 3 at Fairview today in a Sophomore Plate over 1400m. All Systems Go is not the best weighted runner in this field of three-year-olds but he will just have 54kg on his back as well as log-leading jockey Craig Zackey.
If all the travelling has not bothered him he should prove far too good for this field, especially as he has his sights set on the first leg of the SA Triple Crown.
