Hop to it at Newcastle with Nashwa

Nashwa is the undoubted star of the show at Newcastle on Friday as she drops in company to tackle the Jenningsbet In Shiremoor Hoppings Fillies' Stakes.

The four-year-old was a dual Group One winner last year, supplementing her Prix de Diane win with success in the Nassau Stakes before only narrowly failing to make it a hat-trick in the Prix de l'Opera.

Her season culminated in fourth place in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, when the Keeneland track did not appear to particularly suit and a slow start left her with ground to make up from a very early point.

Hopes were high she could kick off the current campaign with victory in a Group Two at Saint-Cloud last month, but she possibly just needed the outing as she dropped away in the closing stages to come home fourth.

Her rating of 113 puts her 9lb ahead of her nearest rivals and without a penalty for her top-level successes, it will be most disappointing if Nashwa cannot resume winning ways.

Mondammej can come out on top in the Jenningsbet In Pontefract Gosforth Park Cup Handicap.

The six-year-old was beaten just a nose at Doncaster on his most recent start, coming late with his challenge and only just failing to catch Bond Chairman.

That was his first run without a hood since December 2020 and he seemingly enjoyed the absence of any headgear, combined with his reduced mark of 96.

The handicapper has edged him up 2lb for that effort, but it still leaves him well short of the 104 he was rated at this point last year and Mondammej could just be beginning to find his best again.

Trainer Deborah Faulkner has a big weekend ahead with Golden Rules a leading Northumberland Plate contender and Louis Treize can get a confidence booster on the board in the Jenningsbet In Pelton Handicap.

He was a surprise winner at Chepstow in early June and subsequently ran another fine race to finish fourth at Wolverhampton, with not much more required to hit the target this time.

Zouzanna's starting mark of 84 could prove lenient in the Moulton Nurseries Handicap at Yarmouth.

The filly has run in three novice events for Roger and Harry Charlton, finishing close up twice in both her juvenile efforts before getting off the mark at the first time of asking this term.

Sent off an odds-on shot at Haydock, Zouzanna easily held Prisha by two lengths, with the pair drawing seven lengths clear of the rest in what looks a smart performance.

Her opening rating gives the team something to work with and she could have plenty more still to come.

Pinafore looked a filly on the up when winning at Ripon last month, an impression she can confirm in the Ubettabelieveit Bred At Ringfort Stud Fillies' Handicap.

She beat International Girl a length that day and with that one having run well enough when fourth at York subsequently, the form appears pretty sound.

A 3lb rise may not be enough to stop William Haggas' charge here. - Press Association
