HONOUR MERITS NEWMARKET RESPECT

September 2024

By Anita Chambers, PA

Symbol Of Honour can atone for a narrow Doncaster defeat with victory in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket.

A half-brother to the classy Dragon Symbol, this Havana Grey gelding disappointed on his initial effort on the Rowley Mile back in May but took a leap forward next time, winning a Lingfield maiden in cosy style to tee up a Royal Ascot run.

His Coventry Stakes challenge resulted in sixth place, beaten just a length and a quarter by Rashabar in what was a strong renewal, with subsequent Group and Listed winners filling the first five places.

Symbol Of Honour came very close to his own Listed verdict at the St Leger meeting, beaten just half a length in the Flying Scotsman despite racing away from the majority of the field and appearing to hit the front a bit too soon.

Seven furlongs might be the edge of his staying power at present, but that run can be upgraded and a similar level of form might be good enough in this Group Three affair.

Al Nayyir is taken to build on a promising start for Tom Clover in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes.

The Dubawi gelding had one start for Charlie Appleby in Britain back in 2020, subsequently enduring a long absence before joining Doug Watson in Dubai, where he was a handicap winner on three occasions in the 2022/23 campaign.

Moved on again to France after that, Al Nayyir was a dual Listed winner and placed at Group Two level – a feat he also achieved on his initial run for Clover at York.

Beaten just a short head by Vauban in the Lonsdale Cup, this two-mile test looks the perfect springboard to a Champions Day outing at Ascot.

Louie The Legend has a starting mark of 77 for the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Nursery Handicap – a perch which certainly looks workable.

He showed promise on two all-weather runs, finishing fourth and second, before making a seamless transition to turf when winning at Chepstow last month.

A convincing seven-furlong victor that day, stepping up to a mile here should not prove an issue.

Dark Rosa is the choice in the Northern Commercials Used Commercial Vehicles EBF Maiden Stakes at Pontefract.

She came within a length and a quarter of victory at the third attempt, just getting run out of first place in the final few yards after racing prominently.

Scottish Reel has not lived up to his illustrious pedigree so far, but moving to handicap company can yield a first career victory at Southwell.

A Highland Reel half-brother to multiple Group One winner Laurens, Scottish Reel was last seen finishing fourth in a Windsor maiden in July, with that third run qualifying him for a mark of 67.

That rating, combined with a move up to a mile and three furlongs, makes him an eyecatching contender for the Golf And Gallop Package Handicap.

At Perth, City Derby can extend his winning run to five in the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap Hurdle.
