Jack Milner
The names of racehorses come from so many different sources. Sometimes it is named after a member of the family – that of the horse, breeder or owner – and then there are those where the names of the sire and/or dam are incorporated.
However, there are not too many named after the punchline of joke, but that is the case with Herman Brown-trained Hiawatha Goldberg.
The joke is a little racy, but this is a racing column anyway, so here is an abridged version.
A man boards a flight and ends up sitting next to the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.
Eager to strike up a conversation he asks. "Business trip or pleasure?"
She replies: “Business. I’m going to the Annual Nymphomaniacs of America Convention in Boston.”
He cannot believe his luck. Here is the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen sitting next to him and she is on her way to a meeting of nymphomaniacs.
During their discussions she admits she has a weakness for two particular types of males – indigenous Americans and Jewish men.
“By the way,” she says as they disembark the plane, “what is your name?”
“Hiawatha Goldberg!” he responds exuberantly.
This gelding who bears that name is a five-year-old son of Rabada and will line up in Race 2 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday.
He had his first run for Brown on 15 November in an Apprentice D Stakes over 1400m at Kenilworth following a three-month break, and he looked superb on the way down to the start. He got too far back early on but flew up late to finish to end up running a 0.75-length second behind Count William.
This time he will line up over 1600m in a Class 5 Handicap for apprentices, and while one of unlikely to get 20-1 as was his starting price last time, he still should provide some value on the day.
Apprentice Dezahn Louw, who has captured the attention of racing fans, rode him last time and he will be back on board for this race. Although he will only be able to claim 3kg of his 4kg allowance, Hiawatha Goldberg will still only have 50kg on his back and long as he is not adversely affected by the second race after a layoff, a big performance can be expected.
