Heathcliff to hit Kempton heights

Written by Press Association | Feb 12, 2025 7:02:35 AM

Heathcliff was a real eye-catcher on his most recent outing and is fancied to build on that in the Free Bet With Unibet's Betbuilder Rebound Handicap at Kempton on Wednesday.

Returning from an absence of over two months, James Fanshawe's four-year-old received no luck in running in a hot Newcastle contest, being bumped at the start and getting cut off by eventual winner Marshman when ready to make a forward move just over 200m out.

Once eventually in the clear, Heathcliff came home strongly to finish fourth, beaten less than two lengths, and Marshman has since franked the form by landing the Listed Kachy Stakes at Lingfield.

Heathcliff was most progressive throughout last season, winning three times at this track, and everything points towards him enjoying another successful campaign in 2025.

Daniel Muscutt will have to overcome a tricky draw here, but the cut-off in Kempton's home straight usually ensures there is plenty of racing room for those coming from behind.

Modern Day is of obvious interest in the Unibet More Extra Place Races Maiden Stakes, a race Charlie Appleby and Godolphin won with the useful Native Approach 12 months ago.

Surrey Shadow is entered for next month's Lincoln and can warm up with a confidence-boosting victory in the Boost Your Acca At BetMGM Novice Stakes at Southwell.

Tom Clover's gelding is still a maiden but performed with credit in decent company during a trio of races on turf last term.

He is a half-brother to three winners, two of which have scored on artificial surfaces, so this switch to an all-weather venue should not be a problem.

Standput finished strongly to get the better of Bad Habits at Wolverhampton recently and can confirm the placing on just 1lb worse terms in the Win £1M With BetMGM's Golden Goals Handicap.

Richard Hannon's lightly-raced filly remains relatively unexposed and third-placed This Farh has since franked the form with a smooth success at Lingfield.

Wendigo and Live Conti will be expected to justify short odds at Wetherby, while for those wanting a bit more value, Bertie's Ballet gets the nod to follow up last month's Haydock success.

Dianne Sayer's seven-year-old was twice a beaten favourite either side of Christmas but responded well to more positive tactics and can build on that in the Wetherby Racecourse & Conference Centre Handicap Hurdle.

Wicked Thoughts is taken to make it third time lucky over timber in Hereford's Star Sports We Believe In Bookmaking Maiden Hurdle.

The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old had some good form in bumpers and was a solid second to Holokea on his Southwell jumping bow before falling two out when still in contention at Doncaster.

French raider Play It Again carries the familiar brown and orange colours of Robert Waley-Cohen in the Call Star Sports On 08000 521 321 Fillies' Juvenile Maiden Hurdle.

Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm's charge can put the experience of December's runner-up effort at Cagnes-Sur-Mer to good use against some interesting recruits from the Flat. - Press Association
