Hawk set to scale the mountain

While there is no local racing in South Africa on Thursday, bettors have ample opportunities to make some cash on a number of race meetings in the UK.

At Newmarket, Hawk Mountain can continue where he left off as a juvenile as he aims to start his three-year-old campaign in Race 4, a Class 1 stakes event over 1600m.

He is among a long line of three-year-old stars for trainer Aidan O'Brien.

After finishing midfield on his racecourse debut over 1 400m at the Curragh, Hawk Mountain got off the mark over 1600m at the same venue before impressively winning the Beresford Stakes by 3.25-lengths in September.

A third straight triumph came in the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster, where he led a Ballydoyle one-two-three which included the then ante-post Derby favourite Benvenuto Cellini in the final podium place.

It looks likely that Hawk Mountain is heading down the Derby route, due to his Dante Stakes entry, and getting his nose in front at Newmarket today will only improve his chances.

Beckford's Folly will aim for a fourth win at the Suffolk track when he lines up in Race 3, a Group 3 stakes race over 1 200m.
Charlie Appleby's charge had five starts as a juvenile last season, winning twice on the July course in the summer before while his most recent victory, in the Cornwallis Stakes, came on the Rowley Mile, but at the shortest sprint distance.

The Lope de Vega gelding steps back up in trip for his first three-year-old start, which could set the precedent for the rest of the campaign.

Treanmor should have already handed Appleby his first winner of the day in the opening race, a Class 2 Handicap over 1 200m. The Frankel colt won over course and distance on his debut last May before disappointing after going off as favourite in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He has been keeping match-fit over the winter with strong performances in Dubai and this will be his first run since being gelded, which could settle Treanmor further.

At Ripon in North Yorkshire, Storm Esme targets a third triumph in four starts for Tim Easterby in Race 3, the Clas 4 Ripon Silver Bowl Handicap.

The Palace Pier filly won on debut on the all-weather at Newcastle after which she finished down the field in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar in October.

She responded with success 10 days later at Leicester, and Storm Esme climbs only 4lbs for that victory and is still unexposed compared to her rivals.

Over jumps at Hereford, Insurrection hopes to get back to winning ways in Race 4, a 4 200m Class 3 Handicap.

The Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate-owned nine-year-old has not tasted success since winning in February last year at Musselburgh.
Paul Nicholls' charge has been operating at a higher level since - he was last seen at the Cheltenham Festival - so this ease in grade and trip, despite carrying top weight, should be of benefit. - Press Association
