Jack Milner
Calvin Habib makes the trip to Fairview on Tuesday and should be more than able to cover his costs as he has landed some smart rides for the Gavin Smith stable.
His first mount will be quite familiar to him as he has ridden this four-year-old gelding on four occasions when still with Tony Peter’s yard on the Highveld.
Jet Querari will line up in Race 1, a Maiden Plate over 1400m, and will be confronted with a number of changes. He will be racing on the Polytrack for the first time, it will be his first run over further than 1000m and he will be fitted with a tongue-tie for this race.
On breeding, being by Querari out of a Captain Al mare, he should have no trouble with 1400m. However, he is the first foal out of Louisa May so there is no one with whom to compare him.
As for the course surface and the tongue-tie, only the race will tell. He has raced around the turn on the Turffontein Inside track so that should not be an issue, and he is well enough drawn in barrier No 4.
Habib has picked up one ride that looks to be the best bet on the card and that is Golden Pavilion in Race 4, a MR 90 Handicap over 1000m. Smith has done an outstanding job with this Danon Platina gelding, who has won four of his seven starts since arriving in the yard.
The grey has won three of his five outings on this surface and finished third in the other two. One of those thirds was in his latest start, when caught very late by two crack sprinters.
Shifting late in the race clearly cost him and he still did well to finish only 0.35 lengths behind Mercantour and Fairy Knight where he had Habib in the irons.
