Greeff runners to dominate Guineas Plate

November 2023

Jack Milner

The Guineas Plate over 1600m tops the Fairview card on Friday and as expected Alan Greeff holds a very strong hand in this race for three-year-olds.

He saddles four runners in this 10-horse race and there might be some bettors who will consider boxing his four in a Quartet.

Fairy Knight looks the most accomplished of the Greeff runners as he has raced against far stronger. This talented three-year-old has been unlucky of late having finished runner-up in three of his last four starts.

The Global View colt has always looked decent, and he can start turning those seconds into first-place finishes.

However, the great leveller this time is the surface. They will be running on the Polytrack and Fairy Knight’s worst run of the year was over this course and distance when unplaced in a handicap.

That particular run was too bad to believe it as a true reflection of Fairy Knight's form and jockey Richard Fourie continues to stick with him, although he will have to contend with a wide draw.

The surface will be no issue for stablemate Empire Blue who hacked in by five lengths over this track and trip last time. Admittedly, the opposition was a lot weaker but it is worth noting that Greg Cheyne is back in town, probably making use of the end of the Flat season in the UK to get some sunshine, and he will be aboard Empire Blue.

This colt is developing nicely and needs to be included in all bets.

Whatever happens in the Guineas Plate Cheyne looks the man to follow in Race 3, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m where he will ride Gideon's Daughter.

She has proven difficult to win on but Cheyne could sort that out.
