Gran Descans can inspire grand plans at Lingfield

July 2025

Harry Charlton's Gran Descans hails from a notable Juddmonte family and should be up to defying a penalty in the BetWright Bangers N'Cash Novice Stakes at Lingfield on Tuesday.

His dam, Big Break, was not only a Group Three winner herself but a sister of Dermot Weld's prolific winner Famous Name, who gained quite a following.

Having won 21 times for connections, they will be keeping an eye on any of his relatives as with the exception of Escobar, who won several big handicaps for David O'Meara, Famous Name was not a success at stud.

Gran Descans has the added bonus of being by Frankel but was never going to be an early type and was unraced at two.

Fancied for his debut at Sandown in May he did not live up to market expectations, finishing ninth of 12. Sent to Doncaster a few weeks later he looked a different proposition, always handy and holding off Klassleader with the advantage of the rail.

He is never going to do anything quick and there is a slight question mark if Lingfield will suit, but he looks the type to improve with racing.

Tom Clover's Lady Modena improved markedly from two to three and might be capable of winning the Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready Fillies' Handicap.

She had shown only modest form in two outings last year but off the back of a lengthy break looked a completely different horse when winning easily at Wolverhampton last month.

She has been awarded a mark of 72, having beaten a 74-rated runner-up in receipt of 7lb, so taking that one at face value, it looks about right.

Richard Spencer's Atmosphere has looked a different horse since being sent handicapping.

Unfancied in three runs in maiden and novice company, he struck at the first time of asking in a nursery off a mark of 60.

A close third when a beaten favourite at Beverley a few days later off the same mark, he then won off 8lb higher at Thirsk last week and should go well again in the Bowes Knows Handicap.

Rod Millman's Lyra Lea is of interest in the It's A Photo - Big Fella EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Wolverhampton.

Very slowly away on her debut, the penny gradually dropped and she ran on into a pleasing second behind a very nice type of George Boughey's at Ffos Las.

It would be no surprise if she took a decent step forward for that.

Haberdash had three relatively quick runs earlier in the year and two of them were not devoid of promise.

Ed Bethell has given him an 80-day break before allowing him to make his handicap debut off an opening mark of 65 in the Celebrating The Musselburgh Festival 2025 Nursery Handicap at the Edinburgh track. - Press Association
