Golden Horse can shine at Hamilton

Expensive purchase Golden Horse is entitled to come on a bundle for his debut and should take plenty of beating in the David and William McHarg Memorial Maiden Stakes at Hamilton on Tuesday.

The William Haggas inmate cost 425,000 guineas at Tattersalls in October 2023 but did not make it to the track at two and was gelded before he even ran.

That means he is highly unlikely to recoup his purchase price but from Haggas' point of view, it also means he has been able to take his time with him.

The reason he cost so much is his pedigree, as he is by Sea The Stars out of a Dawn Approach mare who is a half-sister to a Group One winner.

On his debut at Pontefract, Golden Horse completely fluffed the start and was ridden for much of the contest before the penny dropped and he made some headway under hands and heels riding into third.

He should be capable of winning a race such as this and with experience under his belt, better can be expected.

Haggas could double up on the card with Noble Horizon in the Hamilton Park Scottish Trophy Handicap.

This one possesses an even better pedigree being by Kingman out of Great Heavens, the Irish Oaks winner.

He has shown ability in all his races but it took him five goes to get off the mark and he did that last time out at Leicester in no uncertain terms.

In beating the then 85-rated Sky Advocate by over four lengths he ran to a pretty lofty rating given he was value for a lot more.

The handicapper left his mark of 87 alone and the horse who beat him on his penultimate outing, I Am I Said, is now rated in the mid 90s.

This is always a good time of year for three-year-olds to take on their elders in handicaps and a second win could be on the cards.

Adam Nicol's Lady Phoebe might be up to defying a 5lb rise for a recent win in the Book Your Christmas Party At Hamilton Park Handicap.

Nicol had been searching for the key to the previous 18-race maiden but the four-year-old finally got off the mark in a pair of first-time blinkers at Musselburgh.

If the headgear has the same effect second time around, she may come out on top again.

Ralph Beckett's Charming Princess, a 300,000 guineas yearling by Wootton Bassett out of an Irish Cambridgeshire winner in Hint Of A Tint, could be the star attraction at Lingfield.

Unraced at two, she looked green on debut before being narrowly beaten on her second start. She then had no trouble landing short odds at Pontefract.

The handicapper has given her a mark of 84 and there appears to be some wriggle room there.

Charlie Johnston's Ice Sovereigns seemed to get stuck in the mud at Goodwood when the heavens opened but she looks the one to concentrate on in the PricedUp Pushes EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at Carlisle.

She appeared to be travelling as well as anything in a hot race before finding little off the bridle but a return to a better surface will suit.

Johnston's Curran disappointed last time out but should find the PricedUp Daily Sports Boosts Handicap significantly easier.

The time before he was just touched off at Haydock and on his best form still looks well handicapped. - Press Association
