The Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas and Cape Guineas will be run on the first two Saturdays of December respectively at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, and we are starting to see the quality of what will be on offer for those two races.
One runner that looks sure to be staking his claim in the premier 1600m for three-year-olds is Dean Kannmeyer-trained Gimmie Rules. We often talk about royally bred horses but in South African terms it is hard to find bluer blood than a horse by Gimmethegreenlight out of Trippi mare Real Princess.
This three-year-old colt is a full brother to dual Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship and Golden Horse Championship (still a G1 race when he won it) winner Gimme A Prince as well as last season’s HWB Durban July champion The Real Prince.
Gimmie Rules has only run three times, winning on debut at HWB Scottsville in June and last time, despite hitting a flat spot after turning for home, mowed down his opposition to win going away over 1250m at HWB Durbanville.
In between he finished unplaced over the same course and distance in the Cape but was poorly drawn, bumped at the start and still produced the fastest final 400m to end up just 2.75 lengths behind the dead-heaters.
Gimmie Rules will line up in Race 3 at Kenilworth on Saturday, a B Stakes over 1400m, and he stands out as the best bet on the card and a banker in all bets.
Craig Zackey, who has already amassed 80 winners this season at the time of writing, will be itching to ride this talented colt and this time will have the benefit of jumping from No 2 draw.
