Future Flo should have everything his way and looks the standout bet on the card at Hollywoodbets Greyville on New Year’s Day to be run on the turf track.
Prince Florian in Race 2 and White Waters in Race 5 also appeal as horses with solid chances in what is an otherwise competitive start to the year.
Michael Roberts-trained Future Flo lines up in Race 7, a Class 4 Handicap over 1000m, and has the advantage of jumping from No 1 draw.
The Futura gelding probably gave away a win last time when hanging inward, allowing Kalahari Roller to get the better of him in a close call over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. Kalahari Roller latter carried a light weight due to a 4kg apprentice claim and had that not been the case Future Flo would be carrying a winner’s penalty this time.
Jockey Rachel Venniker knows him well now, both of his wins have come with her aboard, but she will be relieved that he has been given that inside draw as he has the habit of hanging towards the rail but from an inside stall he shouldn’t give away an inch to his field.
Twenty One May, who is also knocking hard at the door, finished only 0.40 lengths behind Future Flo and is likely the Swinger and Exacta horse as he will need some luck to turn the form around.
Andy Coogle was an easy winner over Future Flo when heavily backed but that was on the Polytrack, and he has more to do at the weights to confirm especially as he has previously shown little on turf.
Dean Kannemeyer-trained Prince Florian wasn’t convincing second time out but it was his poly debut after a fair first racecourse outing on turf at this venue. He was subsequently gelded and immediately improved. After a slow start over 1400m he got going too late and ended up in third, beaten 4.60 lengths by Star Of The Future, giving the impression he would appreciate more ground.
He goes 1600m in Race 2, a Maiden Plate, where interestingly one horse is drawn better than him and has beaten him before.
Lava Burst finished a neck ahead of the What A Winter gelding when fourth behind Brave Bomber but he was having his seventh start and Prince Florian does appear to have a lot more scope.
Lava Burst is also returning after a break and more importantly is switching to turf where he has not been convincing.
