Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson looks to have some decent horses in her yard and testament to that is borne out by the fact that she came away with a treble at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday – and one of them was the Grade 3 SplashOut Victress Stakes over 1800m.
Teaming up with jockey Aldo Domeyer, the stable captured Race 3 with From A Distance, Race 4, the Victress Stakes, with Rainbow Lorikeet and Race 6 with Kaiboy.
The duo return to “the scene of the crime” on Wednesday when they can continue where they left off. Bass-Robinson has 15 runners carded and she will be disappointed not to come away with a winner or two.
Best of the lot could be Empire State in Race 5, a Class 4 Handicap over 1600m. This three-year-old son of Rafeef is still learning his trade and has only raced four times for a win and two seconds.
His lone victory came over 1250m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville in August where he beat Let It Be Said by 0.30 lengths.
His two runs at Kenilworth have both been over 1400m and have been decent enough. His first, coming after a two-month break, did not go all that well for him as he pulled early on and then had to be eased. But he finished well enough to end up a 2.45-length sixth behind Aristotle.
Last time he was only caught on the line by World Of Pleasure but now over the extra 200m in his third run back, a good draw and Domeyer back up, he looks hard to oppose.
In Race 4, highly regarded Air Raid, a Lancaster Bomber-gelding out of former stable star Inara, should also appreciate the step up to 1600m. This three-year-old has run two pleasing comebacks after gelding. He made eye-catching late headway over 1400m on the winter course last month and gave the impression the step up to 1600m will unlock further improvement.
