Most cards at Hollywoodbets Durbanville tend to test the betting public and that looks the case again on Wednesday’s eight-race card.
Trying to find a banker is not easy but perhaps we can rely on Andrew Fortune to deliver the goods in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1800m.
The weather in Cape Town might have been hot, but Fortune has been even hotter, to such an extent that he has been engaged to ride many of the better runners from the Justin Snaith yard.
However, on this occasion he will be riding Phantom Man for trainer Andre Nel.
Fortune sat on the four-year-old Global View gelding for the first time at the end of January when the pair were beaten a neck after a titanic tussle with Waloyo Yamoni after looking the likely winners.
Phantom Man has only raced five times and while his first two runs were moderate, he has placed in his next three and last time was his first with Fortune in the irons.
Fortune had gate No 1 in that race, but there was no one to lead him so he had to do things the hard way from the front. Considering that it was a Maiden Handicap, Phantom Man had to concede 6kg to Waloyo Yamoni.
Not only is he back in a plate race where all 10 runners will carry 60kg, but Fortune now knows him and there are one or two in the race that look capable of making the pace. Getting some cover should serve Phantom Man well.
What is most relevant is that his last run was at this course as many horses do not enjoy racing at this tighter-turning track so having form at Durbanville is often the key factor.
Once again, they are well drawn as they will jump from gate No 2 and Phantom Man stands out as the best bet on the card.
