Follow Tarry at Scottsville

July 2023

Trainer Sean Tarry has some promising youngsters on the card at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.

All of Cue The Rebel (Race 2), Freedom Square (Race 3) and Van Meijel (Race 4) rate big chances in their respective heats.

Van Meijel is from an illustrious family that include the likes of multiple Grade 1 winners Bela-Bela and Snowdance. He made a fair debut at Turffontein over 1400m finishing fifth, only 1.50 lengths off the winner.

He doesn’t look to be meeting a strong field in this Maiden Plate over 1400m and looks a standout bet early on the card.

Freedom Square also hails from a superb family. She is out of a mare who is a half-sister to champion sprinter National Colour who incidentally is the dam of Freedom Square’s sire, Rafeef, who was a star sprinter in his time.

Freedom Square hasn’t shown exemplary speed just yet but the comment from the yard is ‘may need the run but has good form’. She too looks well placed as Approachable Lass, who has decent form, is racing after an even longer break and she has the habit of taking off too late. More youngsters can improve but the Maiden Plate over 1200m may be easy pickings for the bay filly.

Cue The Rebel runs in a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1200m. She was thought good enough to feature against males in her debut and ran above her odds of 12-1 by finishing second to more experienced Captain Tik Tok. New Mexico, who finished 0.50 lengths behind her, came out to win her next start so the formline is looking quite good.
