February 2025

Candice Bass-Robinson hit form last week and she could have a red-letter day at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

Empire State could be the best bet on the day, but Lhasa, Trippi’s Silk and December Dawn could also easily add to the tally.

She saddles two of the best bets on the day namely Lhasa (Race 3) and Empire State (Race 10).

Lhasa showed little midway through last year, but she has made good strides of late and in her last start ranged up to and looked like going past eventual winner Princessontherun, but the line came too soon.

She is getting better with maturity and should get her confidence boosted this time as she rates the form choice in this Open Maiden over 1200m for fillies and mares.

She looks worth a solid win bet but all of stablemate Stu’s Girl, Alessia Asheville and Cape Captain look useful and need to be included to catch Trifectas and Quartets.

Empire State, like La Pulga who won so easily for the yard last week, has always been a three-year-old held in high regard by Bass-Robinson. He may have shown he can run over ground, but his last sprint was out of the top drawer.

Last time out he gave weight to a strong field and almost won back over 1200m (beaten into fourth, 0.90 lengths back).

The winner of that race, Dean Kannemeyer’s Golden Destiny, who received 4.5kg from Empire State, has come out to win well again since and Un Bel Di who finished just behind Empire State won in good fashion thereafter.

Both mentioned have more to come and Empire State must surely make amends in his Class 5 run over 1200m.

Trippi’s Silk (Race 9) and December Dawn (Race 8) have been left for last but make no mistake, both are in with big chances as well. The former was well backed last time and did everything but win over 1400m, back over 1200m he should be hard to peg back.

December Dawn shook off another merit hike and came home easily again last time and the unassuming and probably underrated filly could make it four wins on the bounce.
