Fairview: Grazing On The Poly

July 2023

Henk Steenkamp

GRAZINGINTHEGRASS gets a huge opportunity at the Fairview Polytrack on Friday to finish the season as the top earner in the Eastern Cape.

The five-year-old gelding can regain his position as the top earner if he wins the seventh race, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1800, for the Alan Greeff stable.

The winners cheque of R62 500 will be enough for Grazinginthegrass (R401 250) to pass the four-year-old filly PEDRA (not running today, R443 000).

Grazinginthegrass will be trying to make it four wins in a row and will have the services of regular pilot Richard Fourie.

The meeting is yet another one scheduled for the Turf track which was switched to the Poly. The Turf Track is not ready for action after the recent rain.

There have been a lot of scratchings already due to the change of surface, including some very interesting runners from the Western Cape stable of Justin Snaith.

One of them is NAVY STRENGTH which will no longer take on the ultra-consistent Grazinginthegrass in what would have been a very good clash.

CHERRY ANO and MOUNT ANDERSON now look the biggest dangers to the favourite. IDEAL ANGEL, FIRST STREET AND ZIG ZAG are others to consider.

The thrilling duel for the East Cape trainers title continues and there are only three Fairview meetings remaining in the season.

Defending champion Gavin Smith is one winner ahead of Greeff 118 to 117.

The meeting of eight races will start at 12:40 with a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares in what would have been a Workriders race.

With the change of surface this race will now be over 1300m around the bend and the Workriders will have to sit this one out.

The first race gets the Bipot underway at 12:40 and TELIO from the Kelly Mitchley stable can be considered as a banker.

AMAZING COLOURS (Sharon Kotzen) is the filly to beat in the second race, the first leg of the Place Accumulator at 13:15.

Another challenging Pick Six for punters starts with the third race at 13:50.
