Fab fields for Gold Cup meeting

Last year’s champion Future Pearl heads up the field for the R1-million World Pool Gold Cup over 3200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday 28 July.

This the final major race meeting of the season and the 10-race card comprises four Grade 1 races, three Grade 2s, one Grade 3 and two Listed events.

The meeting is a Hong Kong World Pool event so punters will be able to bet into massive TAB pools.

There are also two carryovers at the meeting – R2 million to kick off the Pick 6 with a likely pool of R15 million and a R1-million to the Quartet in Race 7 (Gold Cup) with a likely pool of R5 million.

There is also a lot at stake for trainers Justin Snaith and Sean Tarry as they head neck-and-neck into the final for the title of Champion Trainer. According to the statistics on the National Horseracing Association website, current champion Snaith holds a R1,474,587 lead over Tarry but there is more than R7 million up for grabs on World Pool Gold Cup Day so anything could happen.

Tarry would have every right to be bullish about the chances of Future Pearl doing the double in the Gold Cup after his excellent 2.10-length sixth behind Oriental Charm in the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Richard Fourie will be aboard once again.

The four Grade 1 races are the HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m, the Mercury Sprint over 1200m, the two 1600m events for juveniles – the World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes and the Douglas Whyte Stakes for fillies.
