Rain has literally put a dampener on Highveld racing over the past week but Tuesday’s meeting, despite a move from the Vaal to Turffontein, finally took place.
The decision was taken to move last Saturday’s Turffontein meeting to Wednesday evening and the 11-race card will be run on the Standside track.
There have been a number of jockey changes as some of them are committed to ride at Hollywoodbets Scottsville this afternoon.
There are three Jackpots on offer- Races 1 to 4, Race 5 to 8 and Races 8 to 11 – and two BiPots – Races 2 to 7 and Races 6 to 11.
The Egoli Mile (Non-Black Type) tops the card and this 1600m event is for three-year-olds. It could be fought out by runners from the stables of Sean Tarry and Mike de Kock.
Each has two runners carded – Tarry with Silver Hills and Billy Spellbound while De Kock has Arividicio but has withdrawn Climate Control.
Silver Hills has been lightly raced, having run just three times for a win and two places. This daughter of Silvano will be taking on the colts for the first time but she does appear to have above-average ability. After winning her maiden she has contested two handicaps against older runners and has performed well enough.
Tarry had her down to run at the meeting that took place on Wednesday but pulled her out in favour of this race so he clearly rates her chances.
Arividicio has the best form in the race as he has been runner-up in two features for three-year-olds over 1400m at Turffontein – the Listed Secretariat Stakes and the Grade 3 Tony Ruffel Stakes.
He does have a slightly wide draw at No 8 and will be trying 1600m for the first time. While on breeding that should not be a concern, he has been found wanting in the latter stages of his last two races.
Nevertheless, he has gone down to two decent horses, including Royal Victory, who finished runner-up by a short head in the Grade 2 World Sports Betting Gauteng Guineas, and he has had three excellent runs in wet going.
