The Eastern Cape Regional Awards will be presented on Saturday in the Bold Silvano Room at Fairview Racecourse to honour equine and human achievements in the Eastern Cape during the last racing season.
The most prestigious award is as always that of Horse Of The Year and Saturday’s winner will join an illustrious list of famous previous winners such as Hear The Drums, Surfin’ USA, Blaze of Fire and Copper Parade.
Other news from the Eastern Cape is that five-year-old mare Santa Therese produced yet another brilliant performance for the Alan Greeff stable at the meeting on Friday 2 September, winning the Listed Jockey Club Stakes for fillies and mares over 2000m for the second successive year. Santa Therese proved her versatility in the process as last year’s race had to be moved to the Polytrack due to inclement weather while this year’s event was on turf.
It was also a huge day for 21-year-old owner Ewan Garratt, who had his first winner in his black-and-orange colours when Chroniclesofnania won the Play Soccer Maiden Plate (fillies and mares) over 1600m.
Unfortunately Ewan, a part-owner of the winning filly, was not at Fairview because he was at home looking after their young dog. He did join the celebrations later with the filly’s trainer and another part-owner, his mom Tara Laing.
