A number of horses who have moved up from the Western Cape recently have had great success racing on the Highveld.
One of those is Captain Dizzy, who transferred from Piet Botha’s yard to Barend Botes and Yolandi Vosloo at the Vaal.
This five-year-old moved up to the Highveld towards the end of last season and is now unbeaten in three runs.
The Highveld air is obviously doing wonders for this son of Captain Of All, and his merit rating has jumped up 18 points to the current 87 since his relocation.
Captain Dizzy will be looking for his fourth successive win on Thursday when he contests Race 6, a MR 82 Handicap over 1000m. Carded to carry top weight of 62kg, the trainers have engaged the services of apprentice jockey Siyanda Sosibo for the ride which results in a 2.5kg relief for Captain Dizzy.
The theory has always been to follow a horse until it is beaten and then leave them alone for a while but on this occasion there is one runner who is weighted to get the better of Captain Dizzy this time, and that is Axel Collins from the Tony Peter yard.
Axel Collins is himself an “immigrant” as he moved up from KwaZulu-Natal in mid-February and has notched up two wins and two places from four starts.
Last time out the three-year-old The United States gelding came up against Captain Dizzy and finished a 1.50-length second. When they meet this time, Axel Collins will be 2.5kg better off.
In addition, last time the going was yielding which may not have been ideal for Peter’s charge.
There has not been that much rain around for the past week so the conditions are likely to be a lot faster and that could well suit Axel Collins.
Denis Schwarz has ridden Axel Collins in all of his starts since arriving on the Highveld and he will be on board for this event.
Exactas could well be the way to go.
