Diogo to keep on coping for Copenhagen

Diogo Goncalves came through the ranks at Portuguese giants Benfica and had just turned 20 when he was elevated into the first team squad in 2017.

However, a move to Nottingham Forest soon after came at the wrong juncture and he went back to Portugal having played only one game in an entire season in England.

For three seasons thereafter, he was a regular squad member back at Benfica, not always in the starting line-up, before deciding his future might be better determined elsewhere.

The midfielder moved to FC Copenhagen in the January transfer window, contributing five goals as they claimed the Danish title in a dramatic finish to the campaign.

He also scored the only goal of May’s cup final against Aalborg.

Copenhagen play at home in the Champions League tomorrow night where they are expected to progress easily into a third preliminary round where the Czech champions Sparta Prague await.

Goncalves has already scored twice in the league this new season and is described thus by FCK coach Jacob Neestrup: “He has good relational skills, is strong with both feet and has a good football intelligence. He is good on both sides of the pitch, and he offers deep runs and combines well in small spaces.”
