Deira Mile can deliver at Windsor

April 2024

Deira Mile can set himself up for a crack at a big race down the line with victory in Race 5 (18:50), a Restricted Novice Stakes over 1800m, at Windsor on Monday.

The Owen Burrows-trained Camelot-colt is a fancy price for the 2000 Guineas and Derby.

In three runs for Charlie Johnston, he showed a decent level of form and earned a handicap rating of 85.

Sent to Burrows, he made his debut for the yard in the Group One Futurity Trophy at Doncaster where he massively outran his 50-1 odds.

He finished a highly creditable fourth to Derby fancy Ancient Wisdom, beaten less than three lengths and not surprisingly that form makes him stand out back down in this sort of company.

George Boughey's Composite is fancied to defy top-weight in Race 6 (19:20), a Class 4 Handicap over about 2300m.

He began life over hurdles, but since being switched to the Flat he has won two out of three.

Hugo Palmer has started the season well so Auric is of interest in Race 8 (20:20), a Class 5 Handicap over 1200m.

Fourth of eight on debut when 40-1, he then won at Kempton a month later. A mark of 74 looks fair enough.

At Pontefract, Ben Haslam’s Lightening Company can repeat his victory of 12 months ago in Race 3 (15:52), a Class 2 Handicap over 2000m.

Last season he won the first time time out off a mark of 82 and while this year he is 2lb higher, he does have the benefit of a good run at Doncaster under his belt where he was third.

Lerwick is having his first start of the season for Ed Bethell in Race 5 (16:55), a Class 5 Handicap over 1600m.

A course and distance winner last season, he performed creditably off marks similar to this and might just be stronger with another winter on his back.

Onemorefortheroad gets the verdict in Race 6 (19:00), a Class 3 Handicap Chase for five-year-olds and older over 3600m at Kempton for Neil King. He has been handed a little respite by the handicapper since winning easily at Doncaster three starts back. - Press Association
