De Melo to extend his lead on Poytrack

April 2023

Jack Milner

There is no stopping Keagan de Melo at the moment. Hardly a meeting goes by without him riding a winner and at the time of writing, his tally this season was sitting at 213.

At this stage he holds a 56 lead over Richard Fourie, who after a slow start is also producing winners hand over fist.

On Monday racing takes place on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville and De Melo looks almost certain to add a couple more winners to his tally.

His best mount looks to be William Rufus in Race 5, a MR 77 Handicap over 1400m. De Melo rides the three-year-old son of William Longsword for trainer Dean Kannemeyer who really has a knack of knowing which of his charges can produce the goods on the Polytrack.

This gelding has had two runs since transferring from the Western Cape and both have been over 1400m on the Polytrack. He won his debut on the track, beating Gentleman’s Way by 1.20 lengths, and then was a touch unlucky in his next outing when a 1.10-length second to Parmenion as his heels were clipped at the start.

De Melo knows this gelding well as he has ridden him in all of his eight starts and has the advantage of jumping from No 3 draw.

Paul Matchett is raiding with two runners and Back To The Future looks an interesting prospect in Race 3, a MR 88 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m.

This three-year-old Erupt filly had a promising start to her career but failed in two subsequent feature races with excuses in both. She drops in distance, carries just 51.5kg, is drawn No 3 and could do well if she takes to the Polytrack.

Matchett, surely, has not brought her down for a seaside jaunt.
