De Kock duo look ready to win

April 2025

Jack Milner

As we saw at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday, many of the runners from the Western Cape were in need of a warm-up run in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the Champions Season which officially kicks off on Saturday 3 May.

That is not the case with two runners from the Mike and Mathew de Kock yard as both Kadizora and Fireburst have had recent runs at Hollywoodbets Greyville and look well prepared to win their respective races on the turf track at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday.

Of course, this meeting was originally scheduled to be run as a twilight event last Friday but inclement weather put paid to that.

Kadizora put up a decent effort in his first run at the course last month and did well to finish a 3.20-length third behind Averni King, especially taking into account that his saddle slipped back in running.

The son of Querari lines up in Race 5, a C Stakes over 2200m, and comes in as the second best-weighted runner in the event. On breeding, specifically on his dam’s side, the extra distance should be ideal, especially as he is a half-brother to 2022 Gold Cup winner Shangani.

Muzi Yeni rode him last time and he will be back in the irons this time.

Fireburst has been based in KZN for some time now and last time out she went down by a short head to Pongola in her last start, which was in a Class 5 handicap over 1600m at HWB Greyville.

In Race 6 she runs in another Class 5 Handicap over the same course and distance but whereas she ran in open company last time, she will be taking on members of her own sex time, carrying the same weight of 61.5kg.

S’manga Khumalo will be aboard this time.
