Conditions favour Remember When at the Vaal

Remember When has the perfect opportunity to notch up her third career victory from eight starts when she lines up in Race 6 today at the Vaal Classic track in a Graduation Plate for fillies and mares.

She comes into the race as the best weighted runner by at least 5kg and should prove too good for the likes of stable companion Rio’s Kiss and Look Yourself.

Remember When, who is trained by Johan Janse van Vuuren, put up a really good effort last times when she took on a very potent field in the Grade 3 Man O’ War Sprint over 1100m at Turffontein. She took on the colts and ended up in fourth place, beaten 5.25 lengths by highly rated Master Archie.

Back in fillies’ company and with a large weight advantage, this three-year-old daughter of William Longsword looks the one they will all have to beat. This will be her first run on the Classic track where races over 1200m are run around the turn.

Keagan de Melo has ridden her in her last four races and has once again been engaged for the ride.

Stable companion Rio’s Kiss is an interesting runner. She has only raced three times, finishing second on debut, winning her next start and then failing dismally on the Polytrack at Greyville.

She started 25-1 in her first run so the connections must have been delighted with the effort. She then narrowly got up to touch off Aga Heat who won easily at the Vaal recently. That win was on the Turffontein Inside track which is also around the turn so that should work in her favour at the Classic track.

The veterinary surgeon was asked to examine her after her Greyville run but nothing obvious was detected.

The major concern is that Rio’s Kiss has hung in badly in all three starts. This time Janse van Vuuren has engaged an experienced jockey in Warren Kennedy to ride the Oratorio filly and hopefully he will be able to guide her perfectly around this right-handed turn.

Look Yourself has had her best runs over 1450m but if she manages to adjust to the shorter trip, she has the class to trouble Remember When, especially from No 1 draw. - tabnews
