Competitive rides for Marcus

As a result, bookmakers have the former champion jockey at or near the top of their boards for every race in which he rides. He is clearly not going to win on all of them, so the art will be finding the ones on which he is most likely to triumph.

There are no “gimmes” on this card so we will bypass the first-timers Marcus rides in the opening two events and go to Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1200m, where he is on Casimiro for Paul Lafferty.

This could be Marcus’ best ride as the Mogok gelding has only raced three times and has room for improvement. He also has shown good form over this course and distance which is a bonus.

He tried 1600m at Greyville last time but faded a little towards the end to finish fifth and should benefit from the return to 1200m.   

Good Rhythm faces a strong field in Race 7, a MR 100 Handicap over 1100m, but it is not quite as tough as the field he met in his last race when third to top-class Chantyman. Marcus has ridden him twice for a win and a second, and interestingly, Good Rhythm has been priced up at 5-1.

Marcus also has a fair chance in Race 8, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1100m, where he rides Golden Trip for Gareth van Zyl. She has had two fair outings at Kenilworth, finishing fourth in both, and despite her last start coming in a work riders’ race, she could have enough improvement to come in a moderate field.
