Every year trainer Alan Greeff seems to find a decent horse, and this season he has three-year-old Santa Therese and two-year-old Sound Check.
The Global View youngster has won three of her last five starts, with her scoring a hat-trick after her first two defeats.
Sound Check does look the one they all have to beat in Race 7, the Listed Lady’s Slipper over 1400m at Fairview on Friday.
Only five runners take on Sound Check and the Greg Cheyne-ridden filly has made all the running before so do not be surprised if those tactics are adopted again.
Visiting trainer Justin Snaith used to farm these Eastern Cape features at will but that has changed this season, so although he has brought the improving Homely Girl for the contest Sound Check did beat Snaith-trained Europeana in March.
It is likely Homely Girl is a better prospect so she should not be written off, especially as Richard Fourie is booked for the ride and he was aboard the only time she won.
Usually wherever there is a Greeff-trained runner there is a Gavin Smith inmate not too far behind and that was the case in March when Whatever finished runner-up, less than a length behind.
Jockey Lyle Hewitson replaced the apprentice who rode her that day so they will be confident of a decent run from Whatever returning from a break.
Trainer Brett Crawford has also struggled with his recent Eastern Cape raids, but Quick Breeze has improved with each run and will like this longer distance.
It may be worth noting she does have a couple of lengths to make up on Homely Girl when they last met.
Vic Falls looks a fair sort, and it will not be a surprise were she to get a piece of the money on offer.
Smith trained Chocolate Ruffles makes up the field and although she has been comfortably beaten in both starts, she has shown inexperience and the penny has yet to drop. She could make vast improvement soon.
