Change of course is no problem for Casey

November 2022

Jack Milner

The decision to move Wednesday’s race meeting from Hollywoodbets Scottsville to the turf track at Hollywoodbets Greyville will hold no fears for Captain Casey.

Scottsville has been drenched by heavy rainfall (134mm) over the past three weeks with 42mm being recorded over the weekend.

At 1pm on Tuesday, penetrometer readings were 35 on the Standside Track and 36 on the Inside track with some areas recording 40.

The chance of the track drying up sufficiently for this meeting was remote and Gold Circle took the decision on Tuesday to move the meeting to the Greyville turf track where there was a penetrometer reading of 25.

Races 4 and 5 will now be run over 1800m and Race 6 over 1600m

Captain Casey lines up in Race 6, a Graduation Plate over 1500m, and looks well in to set himself up for a crack at some of the Classic races, especially those in KwaZulu-Natal later in the season.

While his only win has been at Scottsville, he has run four times on the Greyville turf track and three of those were in feature races.

Trained by Tony Rivalland, the Captain Of All colt finished fourth behind Cousin Casey in the Grade 3 Gatecrasher while still a maiden, a 0.50-length fourth behind Swing Upon A Star in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes and then a two-length third to talented See It Again in the Listed Model Man Mile.

That was his first run after a rest, so he was probably in need of the outing in a strong contest. Captain Casey takes a substantial drop in class and with Mr Henley now a scratching, he is at least 10kg better off, based on merit ratings, with the balance of the runners.

He is well drawn at No 3 and has Sean Veale in the irons.
