Wednesday’s racing on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville comprises a typical midweek card where the best betting opportunities come early and it tougher as the meeting progresses as the later races are made up of low-level handicaps.
So, cash in early and build up a kitty for the exotics.
Race 1 looks a two-horse affair between Raf’s Rocket and Professor Lupin but while preference is for the former, boxed Exactas could be the way to go.
This is a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1400m and there was a lot to like about Raf’s Rocket’s debut on the surface.
The two-year-old son of Rafeef ran fifth on debut over 1200m on the turf and then came out over the same distance on the Polytrack. Hopelessly placed turning for home, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge finished like the proverbial jet plane to run fourth, beaten just 0.55 lengths by Servilius.
There is no question he will appreciate the additional 200m this time which should help jockey Keagan de Melo sit closer to the pace.
Professor Lupin also has run twice for a fourth and a second place but he is untried on the surface but there is no reason why Vaughan Marshall’s charge should not put up a decent performance.
Best bet on the card comes up in Race 2 where Sean Tarry sends out Turbo Power in a Maiden plate, also over 1400m. This Twice Over colt made a very decent debut at Turffontein over 1160m where he was beaten 2.25 lengths by another first-timer in Capsaicin who was also well supported in the betting. This Canford Cliffs colt looks well above average and is one to follow.
Turbo Power was restless behind the stalls, reared and dislodged De Melo. He got loose behind the stalls but was caught and then reunited with his jockey.
Despite all of this he still managed to run second. He should have come on from the experience and if he behaves more maturely this time, will be hard to beat.
S'manga Khumalo takes the ride this time.
