Captain to lead the way

A Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m heads up the card at Turffontein on Sunday when they race on the Standside track.

Once again, courtesy of their sex allowance, it is the fillies who come into this race as the best weighted runners and they could well dominate the event.

The best handicapped runner is Kiss Me Captain who has the speed to run this field off their feet. Trained by the father and son team of Mike and Adam Azzie, this lightly raced three-year old daughter of Captain Of All has only raced eight times for four wins and three places and her last four outings have all been in feature races.

Ironically, all four of them were over this course and distance and other than the first of those, the Grade 3 Magnolia Handicap in which she finished unplaced, Kiss Me Captain either won or finished second in the other two.

She did have excuses when running out of the places because she was reporting to be hanging and not striding out.

She turned that around in her next start, the Listed Swallow Stakes, Kiss Me Captain romped to a 2.25-length victory over Maharanee who is among her opposition on this occasion. She followed that run up with two successive seconds in the Grade 3 Sycamore Stakes and the Grade 2 Camellia Stakes.

All of those were against her own sex but based on times she looks hard to oppose in this event with just 54.5kg on her back.

Diego de Gouveia has ridden her in all of her races so far and he is back in the irons once again.

Maharanee is the second best weighted runner but is just 1kg better off with Kiss Me Captain so looks unlikely to turn the result around.

A bigger threat is likely to come from Sean Tarry-trained Marigold Hotel who is in excellent form. She’s quite a versatile filly and is equally competent in races over 1160m up to 1600m. In fact, three runs back she finished third behind Mike de Kock-trained Desert Miracle in the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes over 1600m at this course and two weeks later travelled to Durban to win the Grade 2 Poinsettia Stakes over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

Her last run was a 0.50-length second behind Humdinger in the Grade 2 Tibouchina Stakes over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

She is in top form and will be ridden for the first time by Denis Schwarz.
