Candice to buckle up at Turffontein

October 2025

Jack Milner

Trainer Candice Dawson has her yard in superb form and over the past few days she has notched up a victory at every meeting other than Fairview last Friday when she did not have a runner.

Among her victories was an impressive performance by Pioneer Square who was well supported in the betting and duly ran out an impressive winner of the Non-Black Type Michaelmas Handicap over 1900m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday, while she would have been delighted by the manner in which a courageous Chronical King go up in the last few strides to win a Graduation Plate over 1450m on the Inside track at Turffontein on Saturday.

Racing returns to that track on Thursday where there is an interesting seven-race card, and Dawson could once again have the best bet on the card when she sends out Onetwobucklemyshoe in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1600m.

This half-sister to the likes of Zapatillas and Shoemaker made an excellent debut when narrowly beaten on debut, going down 0.10 lengths to Lucky Houdalakis-trained Ringa Ringa Roses over 1450m at this track.

She did not do herself any favours by losing ground at the start but she ran on powerfully but the line just came a stride or two too early.

This daughter of Master Of My Fate will be suited by the extra 150m this time and will have the benefit of having had that experience.

Serino Moodley has been riding winners relentlessly for the yard and he will be back on board this time.

Not only does she have the strongest form in the field but she does get a 3kg sex allowance from the other runners.

There are also some other interesting runners on the day.

Jockey Craig Zackey could also enjoy a productive afternoon. He partners Trajanus for Sean Tarry in Race 2 over 1000m. The Danon Platina gelding has filled the runner-up spot in all three of his career starts - most recently behind a well-regarded De Kock-trained rival in Miami Mountain when returning from a rest, during which he was gelded - and is overdue a maiden success.

In Race 4 over 1200m Zackey teams up with the Johan Janse van Vuuren yard to ride Saragossa Cat, an Argentinian-bred Hurricane Cat filly who won smartly over this course and distance last time out and looks capable of further improvement.

Muzi Yeni is another with some decent rides on the card and he looks to have a strong opportunity aboard Obsidian in Race 6 over 1600m. The progressive Janse van Vuuren-trained gelding by Erupt completed a hat-trick in mid-August and looks poised for another big run on his seasonal return.
