Candice has ‘Variety’ at Greyville

Candice Bass is in the process of setting up her satellite yard in KwaZulu-Natal so now it comes down to finding horses who will firstly be suited to the conditions in the province and secondly, those that could do well on the Highveld as raiding for the Summer season from Summerveld will be high up on her agenda.

Racing in the province takes place at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Friday with a nine-race for a twilight meeting and Bass will have just one runner at the event.

She sends out Future Variety in Race 5, an A Stakes over 1400m on the turf, and this five-year-old son of Var could well be the runner to beat.

He has a lot going for him. He has blossomed since arriving in KZN and after running a fast-finishing third in his debut effort at the course, he ran 5.80 lengths behind stablemate Tenango in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200m at HWB Scottsville.

Then, back at Greyville, he won two successive sprints. He is in good form, clearly likes the course and will have the advantage of jumping from No1 draw. In addition, Andrew Fortune will be taking the ride.

The one concern is the distance as Future Variety has yet to be tried over 1400m. But Fortune, who rode an excellent winner for the yard at HWB Durbanville on Wednesday when bringing home well-supported Beach Bomb, is a master at producing the remarkable and he could find the magic once again in this race.
