Cachet has Newmarket appeal

Cachet can earn herself a tilt at Classic glory with victory in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket on Tuesday.

One win from eight starts as a two-year-old might not sound all that inspiring, but George Boughey's filly in fact enjoyed an excellent juvenile campaign.

Following her successful debut on the Rowley Mile, Cachet went on to be placed in the Rockfel Stakes and the Fillies' Mile and rounded off her campaign by being beaten just a length into fourth place at the Breeders' Cup.

French runner Malavath, who filled the runner-up spot in California, gave that form a significant boost when winning the Prix Imprudence at Deauville a few days ago.

If Cachet returns this season in the same form as she ended the last, she should prove hard to beat as she looks to stake a claim for the 1000 Guineas.

New Science looks the one to be on in the bet365 European Free Handicap. The Lope De Vega colt won at novice and Listed level last season when trainer Charlie Appleby unearthed a number of star juveniles.

New Science is probably just below the top bracket and was beaten at odds-on on his return to action in Dubai earlier in the year. However, he was not seen to best effect that day, having been held up off a slow pace, and he is likely to have a fitness advantage over many of his Newmarket rivals, who have not run since last year.

His stablemate Master Of The Seas is the class act in the bet365 Earl of Sefton Stakes. Winner of the Craven Stakes 12 months ago, the keen-going son of Dubawi went on to be beaten just a short head by Poetic Flare in the 2000 Guineas before injury led to a spell on the sidelines.

A comeback third behind hardened Godolphin star Benbatl in September offered promise and he is easily excused a slightly below-par effort in rain-softened ground when sixth in the QEII the following month.

Master Of The Seas has been gelded during the off-season and this Group Three race looks an ideal springboard to more potential Group One assignments later in the year.

Crenelle can open her account in the bet365 European Breeders' Fund Maiden Fillies' Stakes. John and Thady Gosden's beautifully-bred Kingman filly was unfortunate not to make a successful start to her career at Southwell at the start of the month, going down by just half a length.

She passed the post third and was promoted to second after suffering interference and may well have won with a clear run. Compensation awaits under Frankie Dettori.

The concluding bet365 Handicap has been the source of several good horses in recent years, with the last three winners - Old Persian, Solid Stone and Mohaafeth - all going on to score at Pattern level.

One of the more interesting contenders this time around is the William Haggas-trained Educator, who carries the colours of the Queen.

The Deep Impact colt made steady progress in three starts at two and made it third time lucky, albeit narrowly, at Haydock in September.

The runner-up Asean Legend has since finished second again twice since and is no mug, while the third home Savvy Victory bolted up recently at Pontefract.

Educator, who is entered in the Dante and the Derby, could be much better than his opening mark of 85.

Percy Willis rates the best bet at Wolverhampton in the Betway Handicap. The four-year-old is already a winner at Dunstall Park and having been beaten just a length into third on his latest visit, can add to his tally for Jedd O'Keeffe.

Jumping fare comes from Ayr, where Irish raider Ailie Rose should be supported in the Join Racing TV Now Novices' Hurdle.

Stuart Crawford's mare won comfortably at the Scottish venue early in the new year, beating subsequent Listed winner Fonzerelli into third place.

Fonzerelli's trainer Rebecca Menzies fields Hasty Brook in this three-mile contest, a horse who won a maiden hurdle in Ireland for Joseph O'Brien before finishing second here on his stable debut a month ago.

There is nothing to choose between the pair on ratings, but Ailie Rose's 7lb mares' allowance is a big advantage under Brian Hughes, who continues his quest for the double century.
