Burrito can taste victory at York

June 2025

The handicapper did not miss Burrito for his win last time out, having raised him 10lb, but the lightly-raced gelding can continue his progression in the Seat Unique Handicap at York on Friday.

A winner over 2000m on the Rowley Mile last June, he was then beaten at Chester by 7 lengths but any horse can be forgiven a poor outing at that tight track.

At Newbury last time out, John and Thady Gosden's four-year-old looked much more at home on a conventional track and Benoit de la Sayette guided him home in front to win by 0.5-lengths.

Unfortunately for connections the handicapper was not fooled and he hit him with a hefty rise, but it is perhaps telling that he holds an entry in the John Smith's Cup over the same course and distance he faces here.

John and Sean Quinn's Soca Star can put her experience to good use in the Juddmonte EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes.

By first-season sire Starman, who is already making waves, Soca Star was just a fair third of six on her debut at Ripon.

The form has worked out though, as the winner has since finished third in the Woodcote at Epsom while the runner-up won a Musselburgh recently, admittedly in a seller.

Soca Star seemingly took a big step forward next time at Carlisle when sent off an unconsidered 33-1 chance as she finished third again to Karl Burke's Venetian Sun, strongly fancied for the Albany at Royal Ascot and Tim Easterby's Argentine Tango who just a few days later won the Hilary Needler at Beverley.

Soca Star will not have to improve much to win.

Ed Bethell's Rogue Sensation drops in class for the British EBF Supporting Racing With Pride Fillies' Handicap and she should take all the beating.

She only won a Southwell maiden last year but subsequently went on to finish second in a Deauville Listed race.

With black type already secured, Bethell tried to gain some more first time out at Haydock when she outran 18-1 odds to finish fourth behind Frost At Dawn.

That proved her rating of 98 did not flatter her and due to her age allowance, she gets into this race favourably.

Charlie Appleby's Rising Power cost a pretty penny but surprisingly did not go off favourite for his debut at Newmarket.

He nevertheless overcame greenness to win cosily and despite giving weight away, he looks sure to improve in the British EBF Novice Stakes at Sandown.

Andrew Balding's Hi Ya Mal could be the type to keep on improving now he has got his head in front and the Texas At Sandown Park August 7th Handicap looks a good opportunity.

Eve Johnson Houghton punches above her weight with her juveniles and Mystic Moment looks another possible winner.

Second on debut at Kempton behind one who ran in Listed company next time, she can go one better in the Sir Eric Parker Memorial EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Goodwood. - Press Association
