Brewing up a storm at Kempton

January 2024

Brewing can enhance his enviable career record of four wins in six starts with another strike in the Try Unibet's New Acca Boosts Handicap at Kempton on Wednesday.

Hailing from the fine family of Superstar Leo, Brewing did not make the track until the backend of his three-year-old campaign but made up for lost time with three quickfire all-weather wins, hitting the target twice at Newcastle and one at Kempton.

He was then off the track until last April, when he put up a decent showing to finish fourth in a competitive heat on Lingfield's All-Weather Finals consolation card but he was then absent again until November.

William Haggas found a winning opportunity for his return, but the five-year-old could not follow up on New Year's Day, when a lack of an early gallop counted against him in finishing fourth over 1200m.

Edging back up to 1400m here is viewed as a plus on that basis, given he has twice scored over the distance, and he remains on a competitive mark.

Metaverse posted an improved second effort and can take another leap forward in the Unibet Support Safe Gambling Novice Stakes.

Well beaten on his initial run, he was an eyecatcher at Kempton in mid-January as he came home sixth behind Aidan Andabettin, beaten just 2.5-lengths after a slow start, with his inexperience still evident.

There was plenty to like about the way he stayed on though, with David Menuisier's charge likely to be suited by 1400m.

Rocket Ronald should be able to get off the mark at the second time of asking in Leicester's EBF British Stallion Studs "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle.

He made his debut at this track in November, chasing home the odds-on favourite Hasthing to be beaten just over 2-lengths in what was a promising effort.

The winner has since gone in again at Catterick and Rocket Ronald looks a decent type for Laura Morgan.

Florencethemachine is better than her last run suggests, having been beaten 45 lengths in third at Ludlow in November.

The six-year-old cost £120,000 after winning a point to point but after an initial second, she failed to build on that as she jumped poorly, with a mistake at the second last prompting her rider to ease her down in the finish.

Paul Nicholls is sure to have put in plenty of time on the schooling grounds and the first division of the Herring Mares' Maiden Hurdle at Exeter offers chance of redemption.

Passing Well might appreciate a switch in distance in the 4800m General Gilbert Novices' Limited Handicap Chase.

A 4000m winner on his penultimate start, Passing Well had to settle for third at Newbury, beaten less than a length after getting a bit outpaced at a crucial point over an extended 4400m.

The way he stayed on suggests a staying trip may now be in order.

Ideal Des Bordes is the pick in the Kennford Maiden Hurdle.

Around a 25-1 shot for the Albert Bartlett at the Festival, Ideal Des Bordes has placed in two hurdles runs this year, most recently when easily held by Welcom To Cartries at Ascot before Christmas.

The winner was second in Grade Two at the weekend, so the form looks fair. - Press Association
