Candice Bass-trained Kliptown was one of the more eye-catching colts seen in the Western Cape at the end of last year and she has a number of other nice, up-and-coming youngsters ready to prove themselves - a few of which could come to the fore on Wednesday at Hollywoodbets Durbanville.
Kliptown made solid improvement on his debut run showing good speed before quickening nicely in the closing stages to win his second start over 1200m. Bass has kept Sifiso Bungane on and the apprentice should know him well having ridden him in both starts.
The lightly framed Rafeef colt has been given time to mature but Bass looks to have placed him well. He lines up in Race 6, a 1400m D Stakes where he is not best in at the weights on official ratings but that’s where Bungane’s 4kg apprentice claim comes in. He is now carded to carry 61.5kg and technically has a 1kg advantage over the next best weighted runners.
Not only should Kliptown go the extra on pedigree, but he looks to have more than enough speed to enjoy the Durbanville track especially from draw one.
Keep an eye on Bass’ improving filly Wyze Declaration in Race 8, a Class 5 Handicap over 1250m, who will be ridden by first-choice jockey Aldo Domeyer. She has drawn a bit wide in gate No 8 and is dropping in distance but she looked the finished product and was well backed when winning easier than the margin suggests over 1400m.
She is from the speed family that has produced Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship winner Bohica and the 1250m could suit her.
