JASMINE BLISS TO ENJOY SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS AT LUDLOW

February 2025

Jasmine Bliss appears to have been found a gilt-edged opportunity to make it third time lucky over obstacles at Ludlow.

The successful point-to-point graduate and dual bumper winner was beaten at odds-on on her reappearance and hurdling debut at Lingfield in November, but her one-length defeat at the hands of Holloway Queen does not look too bad in hindsight, given the winner has since bolted up in a Listed event at Haydock.

Jasmine Bliss was bitterly disappointing on her most recent outing at Ffos Las, weakening into a well-beaten fourth after making much of the running, but perhaps the demanding Welsh surface over two and a half miles was more than she could cope with. Returning to a sound surface in the Mick Rollings & Nett Leach Memorial Mares' Maiden Hurdle, Harry Derham's charge can reward those who keep the faith.

Ben Pauling's Vanderpoel looks banker material in the Ludlow Novices' Hurdle. Bought for #90,000 after winning an Irish point-to-point in November, the Sholokhov gelding made a smart start to his career under rules when scoring at Huntingdon early in the new year and that form could hardly have worked out better, with the second, third and fifth home all winning next time out. Coming up against rivals who have not shown much to date, Vanderpoel ought to defy the mandatory penalty before having his sights raised in the spring.

Can You Call gets the vote in the Attwood Memorial Trophy Handicap Chase. Rated as high as 131 at his peak, the Evan Williams-trained 10-year-old has dropped to 119 ahead of his latest assignment, which is only 1lb above his last winning mark. Admittedly, over two years have passed since he last got his head in front, but his most recent effort in finishing second to Lowry's Bar at Chepstow over the Christmas period suggested his winning turn might not be far away.

Lowry's Bar has since picked up a silver medal in a Grade Two novice event at Windsor, so on the strength of that Chepstow form, Can You Call must hold every chance.

Sedgefield specialist Tom Creen can notch another course win under top-weight in the Linda Jones Memorial Handicap Chase. Sam England's charge has won five of his 10 starts at the County Durham circuit and has also turned in several fine efforts in defeat. He was an all-the-way winner on his most recent visit on Boxing Day and a 3lb rise in the weights looks more than fair.

Brian Hughes rarely leaves Sedgefield without a winner and the former champion jockey has interestingly been booked to ride Trailblazer for the first time in the Betting.Bet Free Bets Handicap Hurdle.  Trained by Adam Nicol, the six-year-old ran with credit when fourth on his return from a couple of months off the track at Newcastle last time and he is well handicapped on the pick of his form.

Berkshire Whisper is rated the best bet at Kempton's evening fixture on the all-weather.

Andrew Balding's Dark Angel colt shaped with abundant promise when second on his debut here four weeks ago, pushing hot favourite Megaphone to a length.

Normal improvement should see Berkshire Whisper go one better in the Unibet Support Safer Gambling Novice Stakes under Oisin Murphy.
