Back Principle to come home first at Windsor

First Principle is expected to get back on the winning trail in the Windsor Oktoberfest Novice Stakes on Monday.

The son of Kingman won with a bit in hand on his introduction at Kempton in December and that form is pretty strong, with the runner-up Spectacular View now rated 100 and the third home Spanish Voice winning on his only subsequent start at Newmarket.

It is no surprise therefore that First Principle was long odds-on for his return from seven months off the track at Thirsk at the start of July, but he hung under pressure in rain-softened ground and was touched off by the previously unraced Divine Knight.

The William Haggas-trained gelding should strip fitter for the run and back on a quicker surface can reward those who keep the faith.

Haggas might also strike gold in the Vegas Racenight Coming To Windsor Handicap, with a step back in trip fancied to do the trick for Sir William.

The Night Of Thunder gelding has proved frustrating to follow so far this season, running well on a few occasions without managing to get the job done.

Short priced favourite backers had their fingers burnt after he could finish only third on his most recent attempt over 2400m at Doncaster, where he briefly looked outpaced, stayed on again and then weakened close home.

Sir William is clearly no star but perhaps dropping back to 2000m, maybe under more forceful tactics, can see him record an overdue victory.

Mandurah can make the most of having her sights lowered in the Wilmot-Smith Memorial Handicap at Ripon.

Simon and Ed Crisford's Kingman filly looked a smart prospect when making a successful start to her career on Newmarket's July Course last summer and only gave that theory more weight when beaten just a length into fourth place in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot.

She was unable to make an impact when stepped up to 1400m for the Oh So Sharp Stakes in October and was again well held on her return from nine months off the track in a Listed event in France in early July.

However, conditions at Deauville were perhaps softer than ideal and returning to a sounder surface on her second start back, it would be no surprise to see her put up an improved performance on her first start in a handicap.

Goyard looks well placed to make it back-to-back wins at the North Yorkshire circuit in the ripon-races.co.uk Book Now For Saturday August 16th Novice Stakes.

A promising second to the 90-rated Wicketkeeper on his Doncaster debut, David O'Meara's three-year-old went one better in more testing terrain here little over a fortnight ago.

The form of that race is probably nothing to write home about, but Goyard could do no more than dominate from the front as he did and he looks capable of defying a penalty in this company before having his sights raised in due course.

Dunkeld Dreamer can provide Karl Burke with yet another juvenile success in the Get The Best Odds With Oddschecker Nursery Handicap at Carlisle.

The Spigot Lodge handler has been firing on all cylinders with his two-year-olds this term and while this cheaply-bought filly was well beaten in three starts in maiden company, that allowed her to enter the handicap sphere off a lowly mark of 56 at Beverley three weeks ago and she took full advantage.

She is up 7lb for that clear-cut win, which does not look insurmountable.

Lingfield punters should side with Joseph O'Brien's Irish raider Teewinot, who looks poised to make it third time lucky in the Get The Inside Track With raceday-ready.com Maiden Fillies' Stakes following two sound efforts on home soil. - Press Association
