ARTISTA CAN BRUSH ASIDE BEVERLEY RIVALS

May 2025

By Ashley Iveson, PA

Artista can confirm debut promise with victory in the Hurn 'Confined' EBF Novice Stakes at Beverley.

A relatively cheap yearling purchase at E36,000, the Caravaggio filly was sent to the Westwood three weeks ago for her competitive introduction and shaped with plenty of encouragement in finishing third.

A high draw meant she was trapped wide for much of the way and she briefly looked outpaced, but there was a lot to like about the way she charged home when the penny dropped and she was beaten only two lengths at the line.

Artista should be sharper for the experience and looks a winner in waiting.

Keldeo has already shown a liking for Beverley and another bold bid is expected in the Annie Oxtoby Memorial Handicap.

In three previous course visits the Ollie Pears-trained four-year-old has won once and finished third and fourth, most recently beaten just a length last week.

Prior to that effort she had recorded a fourth career win in game style at Pontefract, so she is clearly in good heart this spring and a mark of 72 does not look beyond her if things fall right.

A drop back in trip might do the trick for Bobacious in the Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap.

Bought out of Georgina Nicholls' yard for 17,000 guineas in November, the Telescope gelding has since posted three decent efforts for Ed Dunlop over a mile and a quarter, on each occasion making the running before faltering late in the day.

Dropping back to an extended mile, he could take some pegging back.

Seraphic looks the one to beat in the Ian & Tracey Late Again Handicap at Chepstow.

The five-year-old won on his first Flat start for his current connections at Brighton last month and has since performed with credit over hurdles at Uttoxeter.

He has been raised 3lb for his Brighton win, but is not badly treated on the pick of his form and he looks sure to go close in the hands of Hollie Doyle.

Abingworth is rated the best bet over the jumps at Worcester, with Gary and Josh Moore's charge going in search of his hat-trick in the FBC Manby Bowdler Handicap Chase.

The seven-year-old endured a disappointing start to his campaign but has certainly found his groove in his last couple of races, with a 9lb rise for a Wincanton romp at the end of March not enough to stop him registering a read success at Warwick three weeks ago.

The handicapper has bumped him up another 2lb, but that does not look beyond him, especially given he is clearly in rude health at the moment.

Evening jumps fare comes from Sedgefield, where Solent Gateway is expected to open his account in the Canine Premier Flex Plus Joint Supplement Maiden Hurdle.

Rated as high as 95 on the Flat at one stage, the seven-year-old has switched codes and while he has hardly set the world alight, his performances have steadily improved.

He was beaten only a length on his most recent outing at this track and will not need to improve much on that effort to go one better in this sort of company.
