Alyanaabi to pass Tattersalls Test

September 2023

By Anita Chambers, PA

Alyanaabi can graduate to Group Three glory in the Tattersalls Stakes, the headline event on the first day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting.

Owen Burrows’ charge looked a smart newcomer when winning at Salisbury in June, backing up his fine pedigree with a cosy length-and-a-quarter victory over six furlongs in a race that has produced two subsequent winners.

Connections felt he merited a move up to Listed company and seven furlongs on his next start, contesting the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot in July.

Alyanaabi had to wait for a gap to open up before launching his challenge that day, eventually coming home just under five lengths behind an on-form Rosallion and looking as though there is more to come.

While the winner has not franked the form subsequently, runner-up Al Musmak has struck Listed gold while Dancing Gemini, who was beaten 10 lengths into fifth by the selection, hacked up in a decent Doncaster heat and is booked for a Group One date.

Trawlerman made a successful return to British action earlier this month and can kick on again in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes.

Last year’s Ebor hero ran a fine race to take third in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot last October, but floundered when sent to Saudi Arabia and Dubai at the start of the year.

The five-year-old put two disappointing runs behind him with a bloodless success at Salisbury and this Listed contest is the ideal stopping point on the way to another Champions Day outing.

Frankness looks a runner on the up ahead of the British EBF 40th Anniversary Premier Fillies’ Handicap.

A winner at Goodwood in June, she ran well enough in a couple of hot handicaps before regaining the winning thread when reverting to distaff company at Salisbury earlier this month.

Triumphing off a mark of 89, she showed a fine attitude to beat the reopposing Al Simmo by a length and a 4lb rise may not be enough of an anchor.

George Boughey sends a couple of smart types in Zayina and King Lear to Pontefract.

Zayina contests the K C Sofas Castleford Restricted Novice Stakes after finishing fourth on debut at Beverley last month.

She had to race a bit wide on the Westwood, so her three-and-a-half-length defeat can be upgraded.

King Lear makes his handicap bow after winning one of his three outings in maiden and novice company.

He was beaten just a head under a 7lb penalty at Goodwood at the start of the month and an opening mark of 93 does not appear insurmountable in the Simon Scrope Dalby Screw-Driver Handicap.
