Africans for Scottsville double

January 2023

Jack Milner

African Folklore confirmed an interesting family trend on debut.

While half-sisters Miracle Flight and Mythical Dream not only won their first starts, they proved unbeatable in their next two.

African Folklore, however, may follow in the footsteps of her two half-brothers, Tripod and Mythical Bolt, who won their next starts after running second on debut.

The family is full of speed and African Folklore showed on debut she had inherited the talent. On that occasion she was quickest out of the blocks without being rushed but then became a bit flat-footed when turning for home. The sight of the open straight and grandstand may have halted her progress at Hollywoodbets Greyville. She did get going nicely again near the finish, beaten only 0.50-lengths by Givers Grace.

A winner has already come out of that form line.

In Race 1 on Wednesday, a Maiden Plate for juvenile fillies over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, she should have no problem maintaining a consistent pace throughout and rates the best bet on the day.

African Dusk, who lines up in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1400m, let his side down last time. In his penultimate, he caught the eye when running second to Gold Rush golden ticket buy-in See It Again, producing a powerful finish. His last run, when third last from a wide draw, is too bad to be true. He was restless, jumped slowly and never got into it. He was examined by the vet who found nothing untoward.

Fast forward two months and two weeks and astute trainer Garth Puller looks to have found the right race in which he will be able to build his confidence. He is rated nine points better than the next highest rated, Uncle Lucky, and jumps from a decent barrier in gate No 3.
